Our stop animation!

For our final assembly we had a colour theme so Room 7 decided to make a stop animation to a colour song we liked. We used lollies to make our pictures and had to take a photo every time we moved something. It took a whole day to make it but everyone got to make a picture each. We are VERY proud of this!!

Market day!

We had a fantastic market day a few weeks ago at the end of our money unit. We all got opportunities over a week to earn money in the classroom (play money of course!) and then we had a market day so we could spend it!! Both room 6 and 7 joined in and during the week we made stuff to sell on market day like jelly, popcorn, fairy bread, magnets, finger puppets and fruit kebabs. We had 15 minutes to be a seller so we had to work out change for people and 15 minutes to be a buyer where we had to work out what we could buy with our money. Mr Thew even came and joined in! It really helped us to learn about money and the value of things and it was heaps of fun too!

We found this video on YouTube and thought it was really funny! We like how the guinea pigs follow the person round in a line...maybe we could train Bert and Ernie to do this??

Tabloid sports!

We had a great time doing tabloid sports on wild hair day. We had turns at different games and activities out on the astroturf. Lots of fun in the sun!

Spiral snakes!

After visiting the show of 'Snake and Lizard' we decided to make some spiral snakes to hang from the net in room 7. We took our time making patterns and colouring in carefully with pastel. We think they look bright and colourful...and not scary at all!

Check out Bert and Ernie!

We can not believe how much Bert and Ernie the guinea pigs have grown!
They are so friendly that they will eat out of our hand and sometimes we can even take them for a walk on a special guinea pig lead! They like to cuddle up inside our jumpers and listen to us read books! We love them so much!

Skipping!

We are beginning our skipping programme for P.E. this term and in a few weeks we will have 'Jump off day' where we do lots of different skipping activities to music. Today was our first day trying to skip - some of us were amazing...and some of us need a wee bit more practise! Look at our wild hair in some of the photos! (we are getting ready for wild hair day on Friday!)

Lizards, lizards, lizards!

Look at our fabulous lizards!! We have been reading a book called Lizzie the little lizard and we are also going to see the show 'Lizard and Snake' next term so we decided to make our own lizards for the wall. We did drafts in our art books before enlarging them onto paper. We used mosaic squares to create patterns on our lizards and dyed them so they would be camouflaged in all our leaves! We think they look very cool!

Our lovely student teachers have made this fantastic new playground game for us. It is a kiwi version of snakes and ladders called...Lizards and ferns! It is big and strong enough for us to actually play the game ON it which we think is very cool...thank you!!!

Simple machines!

We have been learning all about simple machines. Our favourite ones are levers and pulleys because they help us lift things. We have been playing with them in class to figure out how they work.

Fraction fun!

We have been learning about fractions in maths and our student teacher had a fun lesson for us. First we got to play with playdough and make pizzas! We were learning about halves so we cut our pizzas in half and shared them with a friend. Some of us even pretended to eat them! Then we traced around lots of shapes on paper and cut them out and folded them in half. We cut them down the middle with scissors and glued them into our maths book. Now we are starting to understand what a half means...next up we will try quarters!

Gymnastics!

For the last few weeks in P.E. we have been doing some basic gymnastics. Last year we were lucky enough to go to the Bruce Pullman Centre with proper instructors and equipment, but this year we managed to still have lots of fun just doing what we could at school. We used our playground and some basic equipment in the auditorium to work on our balancing, jumping and landing skills. We noticed great improvement in our balancing and upper body strength in just a few weeks! And of course we had lots and lots of FUN!!

Making marvellous muffins!

Last week our shared book was called 'The King's cake' by Jill Eggleton. We loved reading it and thought it would be a good idea to make a cake in our class! Miss Baker looked for a cake tin but could only find a muffin tin but we liked that because it meant that we got a little cake each!! We made yummy banana chocolate chip muffins and each of us took turns to measure and mix. The video shows how we made them and how much fun we had!

We miss Kashin!

Dear Burma,
I am sorry about Kashin dying. I will miss her and I feel very sorry. I loved Kashin and I hope you feel ok. I liked it when you played with each other. Kashin was clever to push logs with her trunk. From Chelsea

Dear Auckland Zoo,
I feel sad because Kashin died yesterday. We visited the zoo this year. We saw Kashin rolling a log in the log race. Kashin was a clever elephant and a tickly elephant. We will all miss you in Room 7 Kashin.
From Kevan

To the Zoo,
I feel sad. Kashin was my favourite animal at the zoo. Kashin was the bomb!! She had a big brain and was nice to people and was good at lifting. The zoo keepers are the bomb too because they looked after her! From Drew

To the Zoo,
I am sad because Kashin died. She did cool tricks and she looked soft and hairy. Kashin liked mud baths so she didn’t get sunburnt. I wish I could hug Kashin. You must be sad at the zoo too. Kashin was so brave and she had big muscles. From N’Kastro

Dear Burma,
Do you miss Kashin? All our school miss her. I liked it when Kashin dipped her long trunk in the water and squirted water out of it. I think the zoo keepers will miss Kashin a lot. I do. From Georgia

We love buddy reading!

In Room 7 we love to read! And we especially love buddy reading! Sometimes in class we get a chance to read to each other and twice a term we buddy up with another class in the school! Last week we did buddy reading with Room 17 from the middle school. It was nice and sunny so we went outside to share our reading. The whole school was buddy reading at the same time so everywhere you looked people were reading to each other...how cool is that!!

Pasifika parade!

Pasifika parade on PhotoPeach

We celebrated Pasifika week by having all sorts of activities throughout the school. On Friday we had a parade to celebrate all the diversity we have in our school with so many cultures. Children and teachers dressed up in outfits to celebrate their culture and heritage! We marched around the courts to music and clapping from all the parents who had come to watch. It was a lot of fun for everyone, especially the dancing at the end!

Maori arts rotation!

As part of Maori language week some classes took part in a Maori arts rotation where children made putiputi (flax flowers), kowhaiwhai patterned headbands and poi as well as participating in traditional waiata and rakau (stick) games. Everyone had lots of fun and learnt some new skills!

Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori

Kia ora everyone! As you probably know last week was Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori - Maori language week! We celebrated this by trying to use lots of Te Reo in the classroom and made a wall display using photos of some of the words that we know. These are some of the pictures up on the wall - do you know what they are? (hint - the photos are a big clue!)

Guinea pigs on holiday!

Grumpy Bear!

We have made another movie! This one is also about one of our big books - Grumpy Bear by Jill Eggleton. We had lots of fun getting into our character roles and making our headbands. We think our Grumpy Bear is very clever to remember all the words and actions! Hollywood here we come!!

The bird dance!

Room 7 does the 7 Jumps!

For our P.E. programme this term we have been learning various folk dances. The junior school shared some of their favourites with parents last week at our folk dancing festival. Room 7 were the lucky last class up and performed the '7 Jumps'! We had lots of fun and got to pull all the parents and teachers up to join in the bird dance after we had finished.

Crumpet the cat!

Today we had fun dramatising our big book of the week 'Crumpet the cat'. We all made cat masks to wear and then we acted out the story. Miss Baker videoed us and we watched it on the smartboard. We thought it was a great way to really get into the book! MEOW!!!
